Description

The Crozes-Hermitage AOP red from Domaine Jean-François Jacouton is a cuvée that showcases the finesse of northern Rhône Valley wines. Made from 100% Syrah, the region’s emblematic grape, this wine comes from vines grown on alluvial terraces and clay-limestone soils, facing north and east, which encourages slow, balanced ripening of the grapes. The estate practises sustainable farming, with environmentally friendly practices, rigorous vineyard management and controlled yields.

The grapes are picked by hand, with careful berry sorting to guarantee optimum quality. Vinification takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, with a cold pre-fermentation maceration, followed by a classic fermentation with gentle pumping over. This method allows a fine extraction of the tannins and preserves the aromatic expression of the fruit. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, with limited use of new oak (around 20%), to give the wine structure without masking the typicity of the grape variety.

On tasting, the Crozes-Hermitage red shows an intense garnet colour with purple tints. The nose is precise and complex, revealing aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and violet, combined with notes of sweet spice, black pepper and liquorice. On the palate, the attack is supple and the mid-palate broad, with fine, well-integrated tannins. The structure is balanced, with lovely freshness that extends the tasting and supports an elegant finish with slightly oaky and mineral accents.

This wine is a perfect match for dishes with character such as jugged hare, duck breast, grilled red meat or mature cheeses. It can be enjoyed now after aeration, but has an ageing potential of 7 to 10 years, during which it will gain in complexity and patina.
