Description
The Côte-Rôtie Drevon from Domaine de Rosiers is a cuvée of character, made in tribute to the current winemaker’s great-grandfather and a testament to know-how passed down over four generations. It comes from several carefully selected plots on the steep slopes of the Côte-Rôtie appellation, particularly in the southern sector of the commune of Ampuis. These south/south-east-facing terroirs lie mainly on decomposed schist and granite, giving the wine its mineral backbone and tension.
The blend is true to the tradition of the appellation: 98% Syrah, the king grape of Côte-Rôtie, and 2% Viognier, co-fermented to add aromatic finesse and complexity. The vines, 30 to 40 years old on average, are farmed sustainably, with careful work in the vineyard (trellising, leaf thinning, green harvesting) and hand harvesting into small crates to preserve the integrity of the berries.
Vinification is traditional: the grapes are partially destemmed, then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks for around 3 weeks, with daily punching down and pumping over. After malolactic fermentation, the cuvée is aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, some of them new, to give the wine structure without masking the expression of the terroir.
On tasting, the Drevon cuvée shows a deep ruby colour with violet tints. The nose is rich and complex, combining ripe black fruit (blackcurrant, blackberry), spices (black pepper, liquorice), floral notes (violet) and fine oak (cedar, vanilla). On the palate, the texture is dense yet elegant, the tannins are fine and well integrated, and the finish long, fresh and slightly smoky. The minerality of the terroir lends the whole a lovely vertical lift.
This wine can be enjoyed after decanting from its first few years, but will reach its peak after 5 to 10 years of ageing, or even longer depending on the vintage. It will pair perfectly with grilled red meat, game in sauce, duck breast or hard matured cheeses.
