Description
The 2023 vintage of the Coteaux Bourguignons red from Domaine de la Monette is a fine illustration of the agility of this young appellation, which allows a modern, fresh and approachable take on the red wines of Burgundy. Made mainly from Gamay, with a possible touch of Pinot Noir, this wine is made to preserve all the fruit, drinkability and aromatic directness characteristic of these grape varieties.
The vines, grown in the Mercurey area, are farmed using environmentally friendly practices, with careful soil work, no weedkillers and minimal use of inputs. The 2023 vintage, marked by generally favourable weather, produced healthy, ripe grapes with a fine balance between freshness and phenolic ripeness.
After hand harvesting, the grapes are put into tank whole or partly destemmed, depending on the plot and the style sought. Alcoholic fermentation takes place with indigenous yeasts, in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with gentle extraction through moderate pump-overs. The short maceration (8 to 12 days) aims to preserve the fruit and lightness of the wine. Ageing then continues in tank for 6 to 8 months, without oak barrels, to keep all the wine’s freshness.
In the glass, the wine shows a brilliant ruby colour with purple highlights. The nose gives off aromas of fresh red berries – raspberry, redcurrant, cherry – accompanied by floral notes and a discreet touch of spice (white pepper, nutmeg). On the palate, the attack is supple and thirst-quenching, the body light but well defined, with a crunchy, lively finish.
This wine is ideal as an easy-drinking thirst-quencher or with a simple meal: fine charcuterie, hearty salads, grilled meats or savoury tarts. Served slightly chilled (14-15 °C), it is best enjoyed young but can be kept for 2 to 4 years.
