Description
This 2021 vintage of La Grande Châtelaine is a pure, refined expression of Chardonnay grown biodynamically on the heights above Beaune. Emmanuel Giboulot, an emblematic figure of natural winegrowing in Burgundy, here crafts a white wine of great precision, a faithful reflection of its east-facing limestone terroir.
The vines, 40 years old on average, are farmed without chemical inputs, with constant attention to the balance between soil, plant and environment. The grapes are picked by hand at full ripeness, guaranteeing fruit of excellent health and quality.
In the cellar, the approach is just as respectful: slow pressing, natural settling, spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts. Ageing on fine lees lasts around 12 months in old oak barrels, without lees stirring or added sulphur at blending, to preserve the wine’s aromatic purity and the natural tension of the vintage.
The nose opens on delicate aromas of white flowers, lemon zest and fresh pear, with a pronounced mineral thread reminiscent of damp chalk. On the palate, the attack is lively and straight, carried by fine acidity and lovely salinity. The texture, at once silky and taut, gives way to a long, precise, almost saline finish that calls for fine food.
A white wine for ageing and of terroir, to be enjoyed today after decanting, or forgotten in the cellar for a few years for an even more complex expression.
