Description
The Morgon 2022 from Domaine Georges Descombes is a magnificent expression of one of the most prestigious crus of Beaujolais. From vines grown on granite and clay-silica soils, Morgon enjoys an ideal exposure and a climate that allows Gamay, the region’s main grape variety, to thrive. Georges Descombes, a passionate advocate of natural winegrowing, favours an environmentally friendly approach, tending his vines with sustainable farming, without chemicals and with a strong focus on biodiversity.
The grapes are harvested by hand, allowing careful sorting so that only the ripest and healthiest are kept. After careful destemming, fermentation takes place in stainless-steel tanks at controlled temperatures. Semi-carbonic fermentation gives a fine extraction of fruit aromas while preserving the wine’s freshness. This Morgon is then aged in stainless-steel tanks to retain its vitality and fruity expressiveness, while encouraging a gentle, harmonious evolution.
The Morgon 2022 shows a deep red colour, brilliant and vivid, with the purple highlights typical of Gamay. The nose is very rich, offering a fine aromatic palette dominated by notes of ripe black fruit such as blackberry, blackcurrant and subtler touches of black cherry and violet. The aromatics are highly complex, combining floral fragrances with spicy hints of liquorice and pepper.
On the palate, this Morgon AOP stands out for its suppleness, its generosity and its perfect balance. The tannins are fine and well integrated, giving a silky, velvety texture. The wine’s freshness, typical of Gamay, is balanced by a fine structure that gives it depth. The finish is long, marked by flavours of black fruit and a mineral touch that leaves a feeling of lingering freshness.
This wine is ideal drunk young to enjoy its freshness and fruitiness, but it can also be kept for a few years and gain in complexity. It will go wonderfully with grilled meats, dishes in sauce, fine charcuterie or mature cheeses such as Comté or Cantal. Serve between 14 and 16°C, ideally after decanting to let its bouquet open up fully.
