Description
The Brouilly Vieilles Vignes 2021 from Domaine Georges Descombes is a true gem of Beaujolais, made from the oldest Gamay vines grown on the slopes of Brouilly, one of the most renowned crus in the region. These vines, over 50 years old, enjoy a unique terroir of granite soils and volcanic lava, which give this wine its minerality and depth. The estate, run by Georges Descombes, practises environmentally friendly viticulture without chemicals, favouring a natural approach to farming.
The hand harvest allows meticulous sorting of the grapes, ensuring an optimal selection. After partial destemming, fermentation takes place in stainless steel vats using semi-carbonic fermentation, which draws out the full richness of the fruit aromas while preserving the wine’s freshness and vitality. This Brouilly is then aged in a stainless steel vat to retain its purity and fruity expressiveness, while gaining depth through several months of ageing.
The Brouilly Vieilles Vignes 2021 shows a deep red colour with purple glints, characteristic of ripe, well-tended Gamay. The nose has great aromatic intensity, with aromas of ripe red fruit, notably blackberry, blackcurrant and wild strawberry, accompanied by subtle spicy notes of liquorice and white pepper, as well as floral touches of violet.
On the palate, this Brouilly AOP shows great generosity and suppleness, with a fine, well-integrated tannic structure that gives a silky, pleasant texture. The attack is clean and lively, dominated by flavours of fresh red fruit, while the finish is characterised by fine length, marked by delicate minerality and notes of sweet spices. The wine stays balanced thanks to a refreshing acidity that perfectly supports the fruity richness and supple tannins.
This wine is best enjoyed young to appreciate its freshness and vibrant fruitiness, but it can also be kept for a few years to develop more complexity and depth. It pairs perfectly with grilled meats, dishes in sauce, mature cheeses such as Comté or Cantal, or fine charcuterie.
Serve between 14 and 16°C; it is best after decanting to release its aromas and bring out its full expression.
