Description
Witbier, known in France as “bière blanche”, is a very pale Belgian beer, cloudy because of its high wheat content. It stands out for its spicy notes of coriander and orange peel, which give it great freshness and a slight hint of acidity, together with a lively effervescence.
Its origins go back to the 14th century, a time when gruit, a mixture of herbs and spices, was commonly used to flavour beer. From the 16th century onwards, the brewers of the village of Hoegaarden made a name for themselves with their witbiers, contributing to the renown of this style.
After a gradual decline, witbier could have disappeared, but in 1966 the Belgian brewer Pierre Celis brought this tradition back to life in his home town of Hoegaarden, thus ensuring its survival.
