Description

The Saint-Joseph AOP – Mémé Lise 2023 from Rodolphe Duculty is a 100% Syrah red cuvée, from selected plots on the steep slopes of the northern Rhône Valley, between Chavanay and Sarras. Planted on ancient granite soils, these vines enjoy a south-east exposure that encourages optimal ripening while retaining the freshness characteristic of the great terroirs in the north of the appellation. The altitude and the soil structure give the wine a precise, taut and deeply mineral expression.

The vines are carefully tended using sustainable viticulture, with manual practices and deliberately limited yields (around 35 hl/ha) to promote concentration and balance. The grapes are picked by hand at full phenolic ripeness. Vinification begins with complete destemming, followed by a cold pre-fermentation maceration. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, with regular pump-overs to gently extract colour, aromas and tannic structure. The wine is then aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, with a moderate proportion of new oak (around 20%), in order to preserve the identity of the fruit and the terroir.

In the glass, Mémé Lise 2023 reveals an intense purple colour with violet glints. The nose is complex and pure, blending aromas of blackcurrant, blackberry and black cherry, with floral touches of violet, and spicy (white pepper, nutmeg) and slightly smoky notes. On the palate, the attack is supple and velvety, the structure fine and elegant, with well-integrated tannins and a mineral freshness that lengthens the finish. The balance between the generosity of the fruit and the mineral tension makes for a wine that is both immediate and profound.

This Saint-Joseph will go perfectly with characterful dishes such as duck breast, a veal chop with girolles, a lamb tagine, or mature cheeses. It can be enjoyed now after a brief aeration, but it also has a fine ageing potential of 5 to 8 years.
