History of the estate
Le Fief Noir is a 20 ha wine estate in the heart of Anjou Noir, in the commune of Saint-Lambert du Lattay, near Angers. Anjou Noir is a unique wine region thanks to its schist subsoil, an ideal terroir for growing Chenin. That is why two friends who worked together on a wine estate in Corsica, Alexis Soulas and Dominique Sirot, decided to settle on this land by taking over Domaine des Chesnaies in 2014. Since then, these two very dynamic young winemakers have been growing Chenin, Cabernet Franc, Sauvignon and Grolleau according to organic farming principles in the Anjou Villages and Coteaux du Layon appellations. An estate to watch closely!
Soil: clay and quartz over schist
Age of the vines: 35 years
Vineyard work: cordon de Royat pruning, disbudding then leaf thinning in spring. Cultivation of the soil and under the vines in every row. This ploughing encourages the vine to root deeply, so that it copes even better with excess and shortage of water. The aim is balance, to obtain a fresh, supple wine.
Harvest: by hand in successive pickings. We carry out a negative sort a few days before the harvest, then 2 pickings 10 days apart so as to harvest only perfectly botrytised grapes. We are not chasing concentration, but rather seeking balance and freshness.
Winemaking: direct pressing with a pneumatic press. Fermentation in concrete vats with indigenous yeasts.
