Description
The Bugey AOP Mondeuse 2023 from Maison Yves Duport embodies the authenticity of Savoie’s historic grape variety. A cousin of Syrah, Mondeuse is grown here on the clay-limestone slopes of the Bugey, in the Groslée area, at altitudes ranging from 300 to 400 metres. The vineyard, certified organic and enhanced by biodynamic practices (not certified), enjoys a semi-continental climate with Alpine influences, giving slow, balanced ripening that is ideal for the expression of fruit and freshness.
The grapes are harvested by hand, in crates, with meticulous sorting in the vineyard. Vinification is carried out without inputs: fermentation in stainless steel tanks with indigenous yeasts, with no sulphur added during vinification. Maceration lasts about 10 to 15 days, with gentle pump-overs to extract finesse and aromatics rather than raw power. Ageing continues in stainless steel tanks for 6 to 8 months to preserve the fruit and the direct expression of the terroir. Bottling is done with minimal sulphiting.
In the glass, the 2023 Mondeuse shows a deep ruby colour with purple glints. The nose is expressive and complex: fresh red fruit (cherry, redcurrant, raspberry), violet, black pepper and a slightly smoky hint characteristic of the grape. On the palate, the attack is lively, the tannins fine and tight-knit, the structure juicy and spicy. This wine combines natural freshness and tension, with a lovely long finish marked by understated minerality and a touch of liquorice.
It is a wine with character, yet approachable from a young age thanks to its gentle vinification. It pairs perfectly with traditional regional dishes: artisan charcuterie, grilled meats, mountain cuisine, civets (game stews), or strong cheeses (Tome, Abondance, Bleu de Gex).
